Welcome to UMass Correctional Health
UMass Correctional Health Program (UMCH), a program of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, provides comprehensive medical and mental health services to approximately 10,000 inmates in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC). The program, which commenced services on January 1, 2003 , continues a successful partnership between the University and the Department of Correction, that began in 1998 when UMMS assumed responsibility for provision of prison mental health services and the clinical program at Bridgewater State Hospital.
Building upon the MedicalSchool ’s nationally recognized programs in primary care medical training, public sector psychiatry, nursing leadership development, and innovative public service programming, the UMCH program strives to effectively integrate our parent institution's fundamental educational and public service missions with the challenges of caring for incarcerated populations. The program is predicated on the philosophy that the correctional system represents an essential component of the Commonwealth's community health infrastructure, and as such requires diligent adherence to the highest standards of excellence.
